noses in books

Hey everyone!

I wanted to let you know that I have a new project called "Noses in Books" where I interview strangers I come across in public who happen to be reading! I spot them, ask them about their book, and the conversation spirals into a mini sociological/anthropological investigation of that person. :-) I find out interesting tidbits about them, to say the least

Check it out here: www.nosesinbooks.com

This will still be around just tucked away.

Quarterlife

Did you watch Quarterlife on NBC last night? I had been anticipating the premiere for days! I even endured parts of The Biggest Loser so that I wouldn't miss a beat! When I heard about the show I thought, "Yes! Finally! A new show that speaks to ME! For my generation! I will relate to their storylines and characters. I will be moved! It will be like watching Reality Bites when I was in college, just like that!"

To quote Cezie from our AIM conversation earlier: i HATE quarterlife with a fucking PASSION

He had been watching it online for a bit so his pain runs deeper while I am just disappointed. It was just another damn CW-like teeny melodrama and pretty much made for the younger demo leading them into thinking our quarterlife moments are just like that. I seriously believed it would delve into actually feeling lost at my age. I had a quarterlife breakdown a little while ago and so did my friends and the episode didn't even remotely touch on it! It didn't even make me feel like there would be a hint of it later on!

Girl vlogs about her friends, her life, her woes. Boo hoo, boy she likes is in love with someone else. Boo hoo, someone's boyfriend may not be as interested in her as she is with him. Boo hoo the actress of the bunch is weak sauce. Give me a break! And her job woes? Almost had it but then it had to dive into the "she stole my idea" cliche. Ugh! Might as well maybe this another Gossip Girl.

I will say that the only thing I am kind of remotely interested in is the show's website. Quarterlife.com

Check it out. From my point of view it actually made me cream! I studied it for a bit today (in the midst of looking for an image to post on here) and saw that they took a social networky theme. They even have the characters (in character) vlog! Their profile pages ooze of MySpace profile-dom. They even have a community for fans who can build their own profile pages and add photos and their own vlogs if they want. They even enlish iMeem for music playlists! I get to see what "Jed" is listening to. I get to see Dylan's vlogs that were on the show and then some! This is like what we did for Chuck and Bionic but more! Now to see if they will actually keep their profiles active for a while. That would be cool!

I may have lost faith in the show but I'm gonna put my chips on the site for the geek-out factor.

a little sunshine on a cloudy day

I don't really like very much TV nowadays (I don't have cable so I also don't watch much unless IU Netflix shows on DVD) but I must say that FX's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a show I actually enjoy (not as much as my current obsession, "Big Love" but it's good in my book). So I'm driving down Sunset to meet Marina for dinner last night when I'm at a stoplight and look over at the SUV next to me. That girl looks like Sweet Dee... I didn't really think much of it but then I thought how cool it would be to see Rob in the driver's seat since they live in LA and are engaged. I look. Whaam. It's him. Normally I don't get too excited when I see celebs. It's LA. We're a weird town. But I got excited here. Not as excited as if I ran into Larry David or anyone from Veronica Mars but my ears perked up. (It's funny how I run into Adrian Grenier and smile but see VM cast members at shows or eateries/bars and I die. Just DIE! Yeah, that's it.

In other news, I am starting a new blog. Not getting rid of this one, though. Just wanted to have my own green blog but hesitated. Now I'm just going to do it. You'll hear more soon enough. I might ask one of you to help me make it all snazzy and whatnot.

Songza

Behind me ABBA's "Fernando" starts playing. Why? My co-worker was trying out a new site called Songza (http://www.songza.com) where you just type in any song and it pulls it up for you! You can even watch the video if it exists or buy the song. I just typed in MOOK (Paul Dano's band I've been listening to alot lately) and voila! It pulled up anything with "mook" in it and I clicked on A Live from Philly set and now I am listening to their gig audio. Pretty awesome since I don't think I will see them live anytime soon.

Check it out. Pretty fun. Now I gotta think of some obscure stuff. Any throwback suggestions to bring me down memory lane? I'm looking at you, Cezie...

End of an Era

Polaroid is closing down their instant film factories (they've already stopped making their instant cameras for the past 2 years) and focusing on portable printer for images from cell phones and Polaroid-branded digital cameras, televisions and DVD players. Digital Digital Digital!

No more waving that film around. Man, gotta stock up for now. Gotta tell BBW since he is a Polaroid camera buff.

Oh Hollywood, no no no

Oh. My. Gawd. I've watched some bad movies in my time and this one can get thrown into that pile. As many of you know, I spend my Sundays with my mom. We do lunch, I bombard of about the goings-on in my life and she listens to my ramblings, and we catch a movie, shop, go to a play, etc. This weekend we opted for a movie because for weeks my mom has been adamant about watching "Fool's Gold". She loves these types of movies and since she's had her heart set on it I purchased the movie tickets for us out of love. (She is my mother so I am sure she has endured many a things for me and my sister).

Man oh man. This was one of those movies where I go in hating it because I know what to expect but still have a sliver of hope that it will prove me wrong (even just a little bit). I guess instincts always win. Is it just me? Are my movie standards just high? Many people were cracking up during the movie. Maybe I just don't care for romantic comedies anymore? But no, there are really good romantic comedies out there that flow and make sense! Kate and Matthew's chemistry in "How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days" worked. Just because they were fine in that movie doesn't mean they would do it again here. Maybe it was the script? This movie was choppy, tried to hard to be funny, to be meaningful, and to be witty! I didn't care that Matthew's character was supposed to be good in bed. Were they trying to be funny with their innuendos? Poor form, people! Just stop! Donald Sutherland and his daughter? I didn't care! I didn't feel for anything or anyone in that storyline. She was a ditz. Don't try to make her deep! It just made her more annoying in a non-endearing way!

Predictability around every corner. That ending was...ugh! I literally whipped out my magazine in the middle of the movie, I was that over it.

On a similar note, the Grammy's made me feel the same. I watched parts of the show but I pretty much found myself changing the channel at many points because I couldn't stand what was on TV. My favourite quote had to be from a co-worker:
"During the Grammy's my boyfriend wanted to know what happened with Jessica Simpson!" referring to Fergie's appearance. HA!

Deep Cuts

Every morning for the past few months, to set the mood for my day, I put on The Knife's "Heartbeats" and listen to it approximately 2.5 times during my drive to work. There I am in my car, blastin' the song with the windows down, doin' a little dance, and singing with a Swedish accent. This song makes me happy. I told my sister once that I could seriously have a dance party and have this song on loop for 3 hours and I will be fine. And that question from Box Girls asking which song I would want playing everytime I entered a room? This could be one of them. Yeah, totally. And I would be roller skating into the room (first I would have to learn how but in fantasyland I already do).

doggonit!

Ugh! My heart! I just found out that The Format has called it quits! "Dog Problems" is probably one of the most perfect albums out there, where every song is just amazing, and their live shows were always so energetic and great! Alas, all good things do come to an end.

The Format, I salute you.

Fucking Matt Damon

and this little gem is making its way around the office AND THE WORLD...

I never realised how old Matt Damon is starting to look. Still aging well, though.

Seeing as I stalk Eisley online as much as I do with The Like, I stumbled upon this little funny clip with my fave ladies along with some Jarrod Gorbel action being mistaken for one of the Strokes. Too cute. And yes Jarrod, your hair is amazing!

Lists Lists Lists

Ok, so I lied. I kind of did make up some resolutions. Hmmm, ok, maybe not. It was more like concocting some fantastical lists. And not just me. Me and my best friends. I make lists everyday. Many many lists. But the lists we make up are different. They are marvelous life goals.

On my visit to the Bay Area over winter break, my dear Karen and I found ourselves sitting in a greasy diner with some old diary/journals of hers from, say, 2-3 years ago? We were sitting on a beach, I think it was in Isla Vista (Santa Barbara) and we made a "Things To Do Before We are 30" list. We actually found that list and revisited it! Surprisingly we did pretty well and tackled half of that list already! And this is no ordinary list! No joke. First we wrote out a "conventional" list, the one about finding some guy, getting married, having babies, driving mini-vans, getting a hysterectomy, et. al. You know, the usual. Instead we wrote out more important things like living in another country, having that perfect bed (because your bed is the place you spend most of your time in), and the obvious (in our minds) insurance for our cats because, my friends, if you are well-off and have everything you need then what else is there to do but insure your cat! That and owning a helicopter equipped with a cotton ball gun! Yes, a gun that shoots cotton balls. We really put that into our list! We also drew a diagram!

We made a new list to up the ante a bit. And because we want to do more to ensure a fulfilling life. Marina and I made a similar list last week when I told her that I stumbled upon our goals for 2007 and realised we did pretty well for ourselves, too.

Anyway, the new lists (collectively) consists of learning a new skill like knitting or skeet shooting (PULL!). Karen and I still need to get better at a musical instrument and learn how to play one song well. Marina upped the ante and wants us to start a band just for ourselves for fun...and not by 30. More like do all this by the end of this year. So yeah folks, I'm gonna be in a silly band with my friends by the end of the year. I'm also going to visit the east coast, learn how to cook, and get laid as much as I can (she made me put that into our list).
